Travel Protection for Your Cruise

Cruise line insurance vs. third-party travel protection

One of the most important decisions in cruise planning โ€” and one I get asked about all the time. Here’s a straightforward breakdown to help you choose what works best for your trip.

๐Ÿšข Cruise line insurance Built-in

What it does well

  • Convenient to add right at booking
  • Coverage tailored specifically to your cruise
  • Typically includes a Cancel For Any Reason option (usually as future cruise credit)

Where it falls short

  • Usually covers only the cruise itself โ€” not airfare, hotels, or pre/post arrangements booked separately
  • Medical and evacuation coverage limits tend to be lower
  • Most policies do not include a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Third-party insurance Flexible

What it does well

  • Can cover your whole trip: cruise, airfare, hotels, transfers, and excursions
  • Higher medical and emergency evacuation limits available
  • Many plans include a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver when purchased within a set window after your deposit
  • Flexible policy options based on your needs and budget

Where it falls short

  • Must be purchased separately
  • Cancel For Any Reason coverage is not always included and may cost extra

Two key differences to know

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cruise line policies often allow cancellation for any reason, but reimbursement typically comes as future cruise credit โ€” not cash. Third-party providers may offer CFAR as an optional upgrade, and reimbursement is often a cash percentage of your trip cost.

Pre-existing condition waiver

Most cruise line policies don’t offer this. Many third-party plans do โ€” as long as insurance is purchased within a specific number of days after your initial deposit and you meet eligibility requirements.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. The right choice depends on your health considerations, any travel plans outside the cruise itself, and how much flexibility you want if plans change.

Want help comparing coverage options side by side? I’m happy to provide a no-obligation quote for third-party travel protection so you can make the best choice for your trip.
